Setting The Wheels in Motion

Vision Boards

Anne

As we begin each new year many of us turn our minds to the year ahead and what we want to achieve personally and professionally. We can make the year ahead more exciting and far more rewarding by creating a vision in our minds of what we want to achieve and then setting out goals and making plans towards the achievement of that vision.

A vision board is a very powerful way of doing this as you create a visible reminder of what you want to achieve. Once you have created your vision board, you can place it in a prominent place to ensure that it acts as a daily reminder of what you are setting out to achieve. I have made a Vision Board myself for the past number of years and my preferred approach is to create a holistic board which includes both personal and professional goals that I want to achieve in the year ahead. I believe that a holistic approach is likely to lead to a more balanced life overall, a balance which I am trying very hard to achieve.

If you are new to the concept of a Vision Board, just search for vision boards in google and you will find lots of advice and examples on how to create one for yourself. They key thing to keep in mind is that your vision board is personal to you and should reflect who you are and what you want to achieve. Don’t worry too much If you are not clear about what you want to achieve at the outset, the very act of taking time out to think about what you want on your Vision Board can help you clarify your dreams and what direction you want to take for the year ahead. You can create a Vision Board on your own or also by working in a trusted group of friends — something which I have done myself and found that group support is very encouraging. In our group, we gathered ideas from magazines, articles we had read, newspaper clippings and from sharing dreams and thoughts with each other. We also had lots of fun, some nice food and few glasses of vino to help our creative thinking — so very social as well.

Professionally, the new year is a time when many if us think about making changes in our current career or maybe going in a different career direction. For example, we may be hoping for a promotion, a career change or maybe more flexibility to spend more time with family, travelling etc. or whatever it is that you want to do.

What you sow is what you reap, so time to get the wheel in motion!
